What I want to know!

I have two questions today (having spent the morning in an undisciplined fashion, perusing the shelves of the AA with no particular aim!), and would be very grateful to anyone who either knows the answer or can point me in the direction of relevant bibliography ...

1. What is the current thinking about the Augustan Suburban District - is it one district or are there more than one? Or do we just not know?

2. Have there been any stratigraphic excavations in the Central Baths? Do we know what was destroyed for the baths to be built? Presumably it wasn't an empty space.

@question 2: Nathalie de Haan and Kurt Wallat have been digging in the central baths over the last decade; they are now starting to publish. They've found incredibly interesting stuff, including the floors of an atrium house less than 20cm underneath the modern floor level of the palaestra.

Thank you, Miko! Do you have any references to their work (or an idea of where I can start to look)?

Hi Jo- Check out the recent "Nuove richerche archeologiche nell'area vesuviana" (2008), edited by Guzzo and Guidobaldi. De Haan and Wallat have an essay in there on their work from 2003-2006.
On the pagi, there has been Guadagno's "Pagi e vici della Campania" in _Epigrafia del villaggio_ (1993) and Sgobbo wrote about the pagi in his 1942 "Un complesso di edifici sanniti e i quartieri di Pompei..." in MAAN, but I'd love to know about current thinking too.

Felice Senatore has an article in /Pompei, Capri E La Penisola Sorrentina/ (2004) which lays out some of the arguments. I don't know that there ever was evidence for more than one extra-urban pagus; the inscriptions that mention it are found pretty much on all sides of the town, and the term isn't qualified in a way that presupposes the existence of others. I'd love to know more about it too!
